Safe fibre cement facade and roof covering from SVK Safety is one of the most important priorities in SVK. Within SVK's product range all fibre cement products belong to the fire reaction class A2-s1, d0 according to the European standard EN 13501-1. This is a very favourable factor when assessing the fire safety of a building. In the event of fire, our products produce only limited smoke and no burning particles fall down from the boards.

How is the fire reaction class of SVK's fibre cement products determined? All building materials are classified into fire reaction classes A to F after a few fire tests. Classes F to B are generally considered to be flammable and classes A1 and A2 non-combustible. Non-flammability is also guaranteed by setting limit values for the calorific content (amount of heat generated during combustion). Especially our fibre cement wall cladding panels 'Ornimat' and 'Decoboard' achieve a very good calorific value of 1.5 MJ/kg. Our Puro Plus wall cladding panel also achieves a good score of 1.2 MJ/kg. Materials with a fire class A therefore produce no to very little smoke and no droplets during a fire. The building materials are also divided into classes (s0 to s3) for smoke development where class s0 produces no smoke and where s3 develops a large smoke production. Finally, a class for the production of droplets (d0 to d2) is also investigated. The class d0 produces no burning droplets while the class d2 produces droplets that burn for longer than 10 seconds.

After all the tests, our fibre cement products were rewarded with a strong class A2-s1, d0. This means that our fibre cement materials are virtually non-combustible and therefore barely contribute to the spread of a fire.

So how do you guarantee a fire-safe building? The use of flammable materials for roofing, cladding and/or insulation always entails risks. In that case, a fire will spread more quickly, releasing more toxic smoke and there is a great chance that the fire will spread through the facade or roof. By using only non-combustible building materials (fire reaction class A1 and A2) you avoid most risks. In addition, you can also take into account the substructure and the type of insulation you wish to use. Non-combustible materials do not contribute to the formation or spread of a fire and ensure that the facade and roof meet the strict fire safety standards.

Grenfell Tower Since the fire in the Grenfell Tower in London, there has been a certain concern in terms of fire safety when using ventilated facade systems. In the Grenfell Tower, the cavity, which provides a constant supply of fresh air and therefore oxygen, was the cause of a rapid spread of fire. However, the ventilated facade was not the only reason for this disaster. The fact that the fire was able to spread at all through this cavity was also due to the use of flammable materials for the façade system, namely flammable insulation and composite panels with a polyethylene core. In addition, there would also have been a secondary spread along the inside of the building (via vertical technical tubes, stairwell, etc.), which would have allowed the fire to spread rapidly throughout the building. In addition, the fire compartmentation and safe evacuation possibilities may not have been present or may have been inadequate. All this together led to the disaster that occurred that day. Fire safety in buildings is a subject about which there are many misunderstandings. SVK is happy to advise designers and builders on the fire safety of its products. We note, however, that it is advisable to consult a fire expert (consultancy firm, design office, fire service commander, etc.) for the design of a building and its fire safety.
